In this age of crappy alternative
wuss rock, uninspiring "hard music" and noisey bands that dare be
called metal but don't live up to the title, we the true old-schoolers
(remembering the glory days when 'Tallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus,
Testament etc. produced the regular doesage of quality metal) look to
the skies and pray for a band to come along and remind the youngin's
how it's really done...
Metallica is off doing their own thing, throwing off every label you
can possibly think to put on them (you're still metal Lars, admit it!
haha!)...Slayer is still out there, but a bit stingant as their style
hasn't really changed as has gotten a bit old...Anthrax changed
singers and style and continue to kick ass, but sadly not many
notice...Exodus are still kickin' but haven't produced anything near
"Bonded By Blood", and Testament still rocks save for that album where
they suddenly decided to go death metal...
But no older-school band has really come along and kicked ass
recently...
Will Pantera be this band?...err
Ok...let's see, if we go past the Judas Priest title, and the cheesy
album cover, we have a Pantera cd somewhere in here...
Upon the first few listens I can safely say it's heavy, and in some
parts reminiscent of Vulgar and Cowboys...but overall nothing on
here grabs me. Sure, "Revolution Is My Name" is downright pounding,
(what's with that first timechange though? and anyone else hear
"Children of the Grave"?), "We'll Grind That Axe For A Long Time" is
pretty evil, (probably my fav on here) and there are some cool riffs
here and there, but at times it seems Pantera are going through the
motions. There are the signature Dimebag dives and squeals, Phil's
growling, Vinnie's doublebass...but nothing incredibly spectacular...
Now don't get me wrong, I like Pantera, own tons of their shit etc...
and it's not easy to be this critical ('cept after Phil bashed a
certain metal band...*cough*)...And one thing I can say is that this
album is a vast improvement from Trendkill, which sucked eggs for
lack of a better term, but 'tis no Vulgar or Cowboys...
